From 1974 through 1986 RAM bought, restored and sold 22 office/retail buildings in the Old Port Historic District of Portland, Maine. RAM was the first company to complete comprehensive exterior and interior rehabilitations of these historic properties, most dating back to the 1860s. The restoration of these properties, within the guidelines established by US Department of the Interior, began the revival of this historic district, which today is the tourism, retail, and business heart of Portland. Most of the buildings were of brick construction with retail space on the first floor and office tenants above. To retain the unique retail quality of the area, RAM leased exclusively to local and regional retailers, rather than national chains or franchises. The Old Port renovation was the defining mark of The RAM brand and what the company still stands for today.
